Birdie by Dogs with Hats
Your irregular newsletter for discovered music to diversify your music taste
LISTEN IF: You’re craving a 2010s summer coming-of-age nostalgia feeling. And your friends.
WHAT MADE ME STOP TO LISTEN: That guitar. After a few more songs, it’s definitely their signature feature.
NOTES: I think the genre ‘rock’ has gotten a one-sided image that certain younger listeners can find undesirable. Punk, metal, grunge; the sign of the horns, and old dads with tattoos and shaved heads. Which is why when I stumbled across Birdie and Almost Famous by Chicago-indie band, Dogs With Hats, I was equally intrigued by how much I liked the song and also it’s categorization under rock music.
The sub-genre indie has expanded the horizons for experimental music in all genres, which is why genres, I think, is such an outdated method of asking someone “what type of music do you listen to?”, and why more often than not, nuanced listeners are forced to say “I like everything!’
